We often complain: about the cold icy wind; the freezing rain and drizzle; the problems of getting safely from on spot to another because of icy sidewalks, slippery streets and slowed traffic. But as a former teacher, I always loved “snow days”. I felt they were a gift from God! I used this extra time to do favorite things with my children. We did puzzles, built snowmen, drank cups of hot cocoa and read good books. Basically we hung out together.
We took time to remember that the Creator of all this beauty and extra day for togetherness came from God. Scripture tells us that “He gives snow like wool; He scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down His crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before His cold? He sends out His word, and melts them; He makes His wind blow and the waters flow.” (Psalm 147:16-18).
Scripture also uses images of new snow to show God’s
goodness. The prophet Isaiah promised, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18).
Sin makes us dirty like the snow on the side of the road that has been there for days. It works in our heart and depletes our hope.
Simply look at God’s beautiful winter creation and remember His words to us:
“but God shows his love for us
in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.”-Romans 5:8
